Raquel Moreau Virgille
Director of The Laptop Life, LLC and Online Instructor
In 1997, I began my teaching career as an English tutor and instructor in brick-and-mortar institutions. However, a decade later I was trained to help students improve their writing skills through email and editing software, and that’s when my interest in teaching online was piqued.
I became an online TESOL instructor for American TESOL Institute (https://www.americantesol.com/) in 2008. ATI is an educational institution that prepares proficient English speakers for careers in teaching English to speakers of other languages. I communicate with students, grade assignments, verify students' readiness for certification, edit training materials and present at accreditation reviews. I’m also a team member on AdvancED accreditation reviews (https://www.cognia.org/).
American TESOL Institute has grown tremendously, so to meet the needs of a growing student body, I started The Laptop Life, LLC in 2019. As the director, I train assistants for our TESOL instructors. In addition, I help professionals learn about opportunities in virtual employment through thelaptoplife.co.
Working online has its challenges. There are minor things such as Internet issues and equipment failure, and there are major things such as breakdowns in virtual communication and the encroachment of work on family time. Despite that, the Laptop Life truly is for me. I started when I was living in South Africa. I moved back to the US in 2008, and since then I have worked online while in El Salvador, Ghana, Haiti, Malawi and Trinidad. I work as I travel throughout the US as well. From hotels and hospital rooms to road trips and flights, it doesn’t matter where I am. As long as I’ve got an Internet connection, I can work!
